Here’s an easy way to make your mobile phone battery last longer.

Most people charge them every day but don’t realise they can be stressing their phone out.

For the batteries are unlikely to last as long if they are run down too far … or charged up too much.

According to ABC 6 News a battery expert has revealed it’s best to charge the phone before it falls below 30% and then stop the charging when it’s no more than 90%.

Jason Wooldridge, general manager at Interstate All Battery Center in Columbus, Ohio, USA, said: "If you're exercising it in the 30% to 90% range you're getting the best out of the battery."

He revealed that to get your smartphone battery to last the longest charge it to 90% and recharge it when it hits 30% to avoid stressing the system.

He said charging also creates heat, which is bad for the battery, adding: “If that cellphone receives a lot of heat the batteries are going to deplete pretty quick."

Batteries that overheat can go into what’s known as thermal runaway.

When one cell in a battery overheats it can produce enough heat – up to 900°C (1652°F) – to cause adjacent cells to overheat. This can cause a lithium battery fire to flare repeatedly.

Incidents of thermal runaway are on the rise.

Lithium-ion battery fires on board planes are rarely publicised but a fire in a device could emit toxic smoke and potentially the battery may even explode, causing damage to the aircraft and putting lives at risk.

*  More than 50 airline companies across the world – including some of the biggest and best-known - now carry AvSax fire containment bags to deal with fires in personal electronic devices caused by lithium-ion batteries that power them.

The bag – which won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise this year - has been used 27 times to deal with emergencies since the start of 2017.
